Enthusiasm for drones takes off as number of licensed operators pass 100,000.

The FAA small drone rule went into effect on August 29, 2016, and since then, enthusiast who fly drones for recreational and commercial use have surpassed 100,000.

FAA regulates remote pilot or drone operations A.K.A unmanned aircraft system (UAS) under part 107 Rules.  To operate a drone you must be at least 16 years of age, and pass an aeronautical knowledge test at an FAA approved testing facility.  Information about the test and sample of questions to prepare for the remote pilot license can be found at this FAA link.  Applicants will also have to undergo security screening by the Transportation Security Administration.  Other requirements are English proficiency (with some exceptions), and be of sound physical and mental health.  Remote pilot certificates are good for 2 years and pilots are required to undergo recurrent training and pass a knowledge test to maintain their privileges.
